The W830NB from Edifier, which we are reviewing in this test, have been part of a currently wide range of headphones from the Chinese manufacturer since mid-2024. The company currently has 18 circumaural models, new and old, listed on its own website. Most of them look confusingly similar, at least visually. Some models, including the W830NB, were last honored at the Visual Grand Prix Summer Awards in Japan in 2024.

An important feature of the W830NB is active noise suppression with up to -45dB performance. The battery is also extremely long-lasting at 94 hours without ANC and can also be charged quickly, with 15 minutes of charging delivering 10 hours of use. The included LDAC codec transmits audio files loss-free via Bluetooth, which is said to be faster and more stable than its predecessors in version 5.4. Furthermore, two devices can be connected wirelessly at the same time, although wired operation is also possible in addition to wireless operation.

Edifier’s own ConneX app offers various options for adapting the playback behavior to individual preferences. The latter works, for example, with the audio modes Music, Game and Spatial Sound and various equalizers. Calls can be made thanks to the built-in microphone, with intelligent noise suppression to ensure clear speech. All-day wearing comfort is also promised thanks to the ergonomic design. The W830NB are available in four colors: black, grey, sand white and ivory.

For this Edifier W830NB test, we took a point-by-point look at the advertised features of the ANC headphones and examined their truthfulness.

Packaging and scope of delivery

The Edifier W830NB are well suited for transportation on the go due to various joints, which is why the packaging is comparatively flat. In addition to some key data and a list of included accessories, it also shows the logos for Hi-Res Audio, Hi-Res Audio Wireless and LDAC. Meanwhile, the choice of font for the product name casts doubt on Edifier’s design department. Legibility was certainly not the main focus here.

The contents of the box essentially consist of a white plastic tray, in which the folded headphones are perfectly embedded. The headphones and accessories are also packed in transparent plastic bags.

The scope of delivery includes the headphones themselves, a 120cm long USB cable with type A to type C, a multilingual user manual and safety information.

The scope of delivery at a glance:

  • 1x W830NB ANC Bluetooth headphones
  • 1x 1.2m USB cable
  • 1x instruction manual
  • 1x safety information

Design and workmanship

  • Minimalist design with rounded shapes and few edges
  • Greatly reduced pack size for on the go thanks to additional joints
  • USB cable is sufficiently long, but unfortunately does not come in model color

The design of the W830NB could be described as elegant and largely minimalist, as well as predominantly rounded but also somewhat angular. In the ivory-white color variant, the upholstered surfaces are made of light brown or beige faux leather. The remaining housing parts are made of white plastic. The darkest elements are the silvery-metallic-looking fork joints of the ear cups, as well as the small grille covers that conceal the two side microphones.

The W830NB are classic headband headphones that can be folded compactly thanks to several joints, which can be particularly advantageous when traveling. The ear cups can be folded inwards towards the headband cushions and also rotated until the headphones can be laid flat. This function significantly reduces the pack size of the W830NB.

Furthermore, both ear cups are flexibly attached to fork mounts and can therefore be angled by up to 25°. Unlike the two previous joints, this is primarily for ergonomic reasons. The four controls, a USB socket and a microphone are located on the underside of the right ear cup. The former are divided into a coherent element with an on/off switch and two volume controls. The single Bluetooth or multifunction button, whose assignment can be customized via the app, is located slightly to the side.

The headband can also be extended by 3 cm for increased comfort. This allows it to be extended from 33 to 39 cm in total. It’s a bit of a shame that the included USB cable doesn’t come in the same color as the model, but in black. So if you value a uniform look, you’re missing out here.

Workmanship of the Edifier W830NB headphones

  • A lot of plastic and play in joints lead to a very rickety design
  • Suitable replacement pads and covers not (yet) available

In terms of the quality of the workmanship and the materials used, the Edifier W830NB left us with mixed feelings in this test. In many places where you would wish for more metal, only plastic is used. Some joints also have a relatively large amount of play, making the headphones quite rickety to handle. This does not have a negative effect on wearing comfort. However, its durability and the impression of the product’s value are strongly affected by this.

Especially because of the use of artificial leather, the issue of repairability should not be neglected. The ear pads are the easiest to change. These are not twisted, as is usually the case, but pulled out of the ear cups.

Meanwhile, finding replacement pads can be difficult. The only ones explicitly offered for the W830NB were available on AliExpress for around €7 at the time of testing. However, they were not in the right color and without a cover for the headband. Nevertheless, there were corresponding complete offers for other Edifier models. So while it is at least theoretically possible to change the upholstery covers with a bit of tinkering, the question of the availability of replacements remains.

Incidentally, no processing defects were noticed on any of the components. The artificial leather used felt soft and is less easy to clean than the smooth plastic parts due to its structure and grip. I was also unable to detect any unpleasant odors.

Using the Edifier W830NB via Bluetooth 5.4 and USB cable

  • Two devices can be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth multipoint connection
  • Media remote control is available for Bluetooth and cable

Bluetooth, which Edifier has installed in version 5.4, will be the preferred way for most users to use the W830NB in everyday life. The initial pairing with various test devices worked straight away and within seconds.

The devices used in this Edifier W830NB test:

  • Windows 11 desktop PC with Bluetooth 5.3
  • Samsung Galaxy S21+ with Bluetooth 5.0

With the “Multipoint connection” function, which must first be activated in the app, two devices can also be connected to the W830NB at the same time. This also worked according to the instructions in the test. After switching to the multipoint connection, I only had to confirm another pairing request on the test devices. From then on, I was able to play the sound from both devices, but not at the same time. The audio track of the currently playing device always remained the dominant one during playback, while the other remained muted. The lossless audio codec LDAC is automatically switched off in this mode.

If Bluetooth is not available, the W830NB can also be operated directly via USB cable. This worked without any problems on both of the above-mentioned test devices, including a usable microphone. Unfortunately, the microphone quality drops significantly via Bluetooth compared to the cable connection.

Operation via buttons and the Connex smartphone app

  • The controls on the headphones are mostly intuitive
  • The smartphone app comes with many functions and is partly a prerequisite

All controls on the W830NB have more than one function. The function performed depends on the context and how often or for how long the button is pressed. The Bluetooth button, for example, can be used to select the mode for noise suppression and audio mode with one or two presses. Bluetooth pairing also starts after a longer press. The factory settings can be loaded by pressing the volume buttons at the same time.

Thanks to the Bluetooth AVRCP profile, media can be controlled remotely on the connected devices both via Bluetooth and wired. The volume buttons, which also skip backwards and forwards, and the play/stop button are used for this purpose. They can be used not only to control the currently active media player, but also to handle calls.

With Edifier’s own Connex app, some functions of the W830NB can be controlled remotely and other settings can also be made. Some functions can even only be carried out via the app. These include selecting and adjusting the equalizer and activating the multipoint connection, sleep timer and HD audio codec. The Find function helps you find the headphones by making them emit a loud sound.

The app is mostly well structured, but the fact that it is a prerequisite for using some functions could be criticized. The login window that appears every time the app is started also quickly becomes intrusive. The main added value of a user account is the ability to find the position of the headphones and save your own equalizers online.

Battery life

  • Approx. 45 hours runtime with ANC activated on high setting, 88 hours without ANC
  • Battery fully charged on Samsung travel adapter within 100 minutes
  • 15-minute charge provides enough capacity for 10 hours of use without ANC

Thanks to the economical chipset, the Edifier W830NB should last 94 hours without noise canceling activated; in the test, this value was around 88 hours. I was able to use the headphones for around 45 to 50 hours in this Edifier W830NB test with the noise cancellation activated on the high setting. A complete charging process then took around one hour and 40 minutes with the included charging cable, connected to a Samsung travel adapter (5V-2A), i.e. a total of 100 minutes.

A 15-minute charge should provide 10 hours of use thanks to fast charging. With a battery level of 2%, I plugged the W830NB into a charger to test this. The battery was charged for 15 minutes with around 2.2 watts of power (5.18V at 0.43A), which increased the battery level by 16% to 18% at the end. Based on a maximum usage time of 94 hours without ANC according to Edifier, this would correspond to an additional 10 to 15 hours.

The audio quality of the Edifier W830NB in the test

  • Spatial Audio mode offered the clearest effect of all sound tools
  • LDAC did not reveal any audible added value even when listening closely
  • Equalizer with little influence compared to Android’s native EQ

For this Edifier W830NB test, I used the Samsung Galaxy S21+ in conjunction with the Apple Music app. The headphones offer various tools to adjust the playback quality as desired. With LDAC, a lossless audio codec can be used that transmits three times as much audio data as SBC, namely 990 instead of 328 kbps. However, this can also result in a higher delay (lag). In a direct comparison, I didn’t notice any difference to the quality without LDAC, even after listening carefully several times.

Like many apps, Connex also offers equalizers to adjust the sound electronically. In addition to the four presets, you can also create your own EQs and share them with others via the app. After a lot of trial and error, the only thing I can say about the equalizer is that, unfortunately, the sound could only be adjusted very subtly.

The three sound modes Music, Game and Spatial Sound can further change the characteristics of the playback. The standard Music mode appears to have no special features. In contrast, the Game mode offers a low latency of 0.08 seconds. Ultimately, Spatial Sound is a three-dimensional sound stage algorithm that is intended to create an immersive stereo listening experience. Big words.

In fact, it is the only mode that I can personally attest to having a clear influence on the sound. Both the Apple Music and Android apps have their own “Dolby Atmos” setting, which I also activated. I continued to use Apple’s playlists, especially with 3D audio tracks. The result sounded very voluminous, with bass and treble coming across much better. A great effect that I had previously missed with the equalizer, but the 3D aspect of the function still left a lot to be desired.

Noise suppression

  • High ANC setting suppresses low ambient noise very reliably

Four different modes for active noise cancellation can be used on the W830NB: High, Medium, Wind Reduction and Ambient. The High and Medium settings work similarly, but with different intensities. In the test, both largely suppressed bass-heavy ambient noise up to 200 Hz, but only slightly suppressed medium and high tones. This worked particularly well, for example, when working next to the case fans of my PC, whose background noise was completely neutralized.

The wind reduction setting, on the other hand, was particularly good at reducing wind noise that hit the headphones directly. I tested this with a powerful fan, the low drone of which was not reduced as well as with the first two modes. These in turn did not filter out any wind noise, which seems to be the main focus of the third mode.

Finally, there is the Environment setting, which simply reproduces the ambient noise. Medium and high-pitched sounds appear to be amplified here. The volume can be adjusted in the app. Overall, the noise suppression functioned reliably and as expected in the Edifier W830NB test. The effect was most noticeable in the High setting. All ANC modes also work during operation via USB cable.

Voice quality in wireless and Bluetooth mode

  • Muffled in each case and significantly worse via Bluetooth than via cable
  • Wired recording offers relatively good stereo sound

The Edifier W830NB’s built-in microphone is supposed to recognize speech and filter out background noise thanks to intelligent noise suppression. However, anyone hoping for brilliant sound in digital conversations because of this is likely to be disappointed, especially during wireless use via Bluetooth.

Even under optimal conditions, the microphone unfortunately revealed relatively poor quality. In the best case scenario, this is “only” accompanied by tinny sound and swallowed details. If movement and background noise came into play, as would be the case with calls on the move, the voice quality deteriorated even further. Even the comparison of an indoor recording with the Galaxy S21+ was clearly to the test product’s disadvantage.

Surprisingly, the above-mentioned quality losses were largely eliminated in wired operation. Compared to wireless recording, the sound here was only slightly muffled and could also be recorded in stereo. This is possible because the two side microphones, which normally capture ambient noise for noise canceling, are used instead of the single microphone at the bottom right.

In both cases, the voice quality is therefore comparatively muffled, although it is significantly worse via Bluetooth than via cable. As wireless use is likely to be the most important scenario for most people, good quality would have been particularly important here.

Wearing comfort

  • Headphones could be worn for many hours at a time without becoming uncomfortable or painful

Edifier promises all-day comfort for the W830NB. To this end, the ear cups are extremely flexible, the headband is extendable and both are well padded with soft imitation leather. The comparatively low weight of around 267g also complements these ergonomically advantageous features.

The whole thing is made foldable by inward-folding hinges at both ends of the headband. The pivoting fork mounts for the ear cups are in turn attached to these hinges. Finally, the ear cups can be easily tilted by up to 25 degrees.

For this Edifier W830NB test, I wore the headphones for many hours a day at a stretch. Fortunately, this was possible without them becoming excessively uncomfortable or even painful. The inner dimensions of the ear cups are around 6 x 3 cm and were therefore just big enough not to constrict my ears. I used the headband on the smallest setting, i.e. 33 of 39 cm.

Conclusion of the Edifier W830NB test

The W830NB from Edifier left a mixed, but ultimately positive impression. The long battery life, wearing comfort and active noise suppression were the most convincing features. Although there was no clear subjective difference when the HD Audio Codec was activated, the feature is a welcome addition. Wireless use via Bluetooth was usually possible immediately and without interruption, and everything always worked like clockwork via USB cable.

The pleasantly minimalist and unobtrusive design with intuitive controls revealed a high level of wearing comfort. Apart from the rickety design of the moving parts, there were no serious manufacturing flaws to be found. The headphones are very suitable for traveling due to their compactness and long battery life, but a lot of plastic in important places limits their robustness.

In terms of sound, Edifier’s ANC headphones made a good impression, especially with Spatial Audio activated, only the 3D effect did not quite meet expectations. The Connex app’s equalizer also had a comparatively minor influence on the sound. The app already offered many useful functions. However, some of them, such as the multipoint connection, could not even be activated without the app. If you want to use the W830NB for a call, you should at least do so via cable, as the voice quality via Bluetooth left a lot to be desired in the test.

At the time of this Edifier W830NB test, they are available for around €70 in four color variations (currently € 69.99 *). For this price, they offer good performance, especially when used on the move. In addition, even the cheapest competitor models with a comparable range of functions are currently (February 2025) only available from €50 and usually with older technology.
