DJI is getting serious: while there is hardly any way around the manufacturer’s products in the advanced drone segment anyway, last year saw the launch of the Neo, an outstanding and comparatively affordable drone aimed primarily at beginners. In our test, the DJI Neo was particularly impressive in terms of its user-friendliness and flight characteristics. Now, the DJI Flip is following suit and delivering a higher-quality drone with even more cameras and modes. Our test clarifies whether it is enough for the top spot and what the Flip has to offer.

DJI Flip Review: Classic DJI look to fold out
- Extremely compact when folded
- robust propeller guard
- simple, convincing design
The most important visual feature of the DJI Flip becomes apparent immediately after unpacking. For the first time, the manufacturer is using fold-out propellers, which is extremely space-saving when folded up, but initially seems unusual.

When folded, the aircraft is just 13.6 cm long and 6.2 cm high, making it quick and easy to transport in a backpack or bag. The propellers are simply unfolded one after the other. An attachment on the underside determines the order. The propellers sit on a joint and are additionally secured with a small cable.
It is also possible to open the protective covers to replace the rotors. The Fly More combo not only comes with a suitable screwdriver, but also a total of six replacement rotors.
Visually, the Flip, like most of the manufacturer’s other drones, has a white, cream-colored design with a pleasantly non-slip surface. The four propellers are located under the main unit and come with a fixed guard. This means that the Flip can be safely launched from the palm of your hand, while landing in your hand is also possible without the risk of injury – something we are already familiar with from the DJI Neo.
Despite the robust propeller guard, the drone weighs just 249 grams and is therefore approved for the EU drone class C0, which allows it to be flown without a drone license.
At the front is the camera’s gimbal protection, which must of course be removed before flying. On the left-hand side, you will not only find the power button for switching the drone on and off, but also a USB-C port for charging and a microSD card slot to expand the internal memory, which is somewhat limited at 2 gigabytes.
The mode switch button is located on the right-hand side, while the battery is inserted at the top of the DJI Flip. The sensors for obstacle detection are also located at the bottom. In contrast to the larger models such as the Mini 4 Pro or Air 3S, the Flip only has downward and forward-facing sensors.
DJI Flip Review: camera and memory
- 1/1.3-inch sensor with f/1.7
- 4K videos with up to 100 fps
- Excellent sharpness and detail
The camera of its cheaper sibling, the DJI Neo, was the only real point of criticism in our test of the entry-level drone. This is where the DJI Flip really steps up its game with a convincing camera. The built-in sensor is already much larger at 1/1.3 inch (compared to 1/2 inch) despite its barely larger dimensions, which promises more detail and better low-light capabilities. At the same time, the larger aperture of f/1.7 (compared to f/2.8) ensures significantly better light intensity.
The camera sits on a mechanical 3-axis gimbal and comes with an equivalent focal length of 24 mm. It focuses between 1 meter and infinity and offers a field of view of 82.1 degrees.
The drone records videos in a maximum of 4K at up to 100 frames per second. Alternatively, full HD recordings up to 100 fps or vertical videos in 2.7K with up to 30 fps are also possible. Thanks to a digital zoom with triple magnification (4K, 2.7k and photos) or quadruple magnification (1080p), there are virtually no limits to the creative possibilities.
Professionals will be pleased to be able to record videos in D-Log M in addition to the normal color profile, which offers more options for post-production. With H.264 and H.265, the most important codecs are available.
Of course, the Flip also takes photos, either in full resolution of 48 megapixels or reduced at 12 megapixels. In addition to single shots, continuous shooting, exposure bracketing and interval shooting are also possible, all in RAW/DNG format as well as JPEG. Top.
The recordings, whether video or photo, that come directly from the DJI Flip look excellent and impress with great contrasts, a harmonious level of detail and convincing sharpness. The stabilization by the gimbal also works perfectly and provides excellent stabilized recordings, even at high flight speeds.
Subjectively, only the significantly more expensive drones in the DJI Mavic model range deliver an even better image, but this should come as no surprise due to the larger sensors. The DJI Flip offers excellent image quality for pictures and videos.
DJI Flip Review: Setup and control
- Control via app, remote control or voice
- Six cool QuickShot flight modes
- initial Snartphone pairing a little bitchy
The DJI Flip is extremely versatile when it comes to operation. This is because it can not only be controlled using a smartphone or remote control such as the familiar DJI RC-N3 or the new DJI RC2 included in the Fly More Combo.
If you wish, you can also control the drone without any accessories using AI tracking and voice commands. After switching it on, you can select one of six intelligent flight modes that we already know from the Neo: Pursuit, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight and Helix.
Then you place the drone on the palm of your hand, activate the button again and it takes off and starts recording videos. Definitely nice for quick recordings, but of course nowhere near as individual as with control via app or remote control. However, you can set some parameters such as distance or height individually for each mode.
Once the predefined flight sequence is complete, the Flip automatically returns to the starting point and hovers in the air. If you now hold out your hand, the drone will automatically land in the palm of your hand and deactivate the propellers.
During the initial setup, however, the DJI Flip proved to be a little bitchy at first. The drone could only be found in the DJI Fly app after I had gone through the setup in combination with the remote control. Only then was it possible to use it without any problems using only the smartphone.
Basically, operation with all three variants works extremely well and absolutely flawlessly. Personally, however, I liked the RC 2 remote control (whose OS is apparently based on Android) the best, as you can control it perfectly with two analog sticks.
This is how the DJI Flip flies
- Three flight speeds; up to 12 m/s
- excellent AI tracking
- precise, child’s play operation
I really liked the flight characteristics of the DJI Flip during the test. Of course, you can again choose between three modes: Cine mode (C) is the slowest and allows for appealing, cinematic shots. The normal mode (N) is slightly faster, while the sport mode (S) is the fastest at 12 m/s (43.2 km/h) and even accelerates up to 16 m/s with a tailwind.
In all three modes, the DJI Flip cuts an excellent figure and can be controlled perfectly and very precisely. However, the drone is comparatively loud, which takes some getting used to.

.
Nevertheless, in terms of maneuverability, speed and control, the DJI Flip leaves nothing to be desired and impresses beginners and professionals alike with its outstanding flight characteristics. Especially for amateurs like me, this is of course great fun.
Battery life and Fly More Combo
- Up to 31 minutes flight time under ideal conditions
- Fly More Combo with a total of three batteries and charging station
Fortunately, DJI has also given the Flip a major update compared to the DJI Neo in terms of the battery. While the cheaper model only achieved a (somewhat meagre) 16 minutes of flight time per battery, the Flip now lasts almost twice as long with up to 31 minutes.

Both values correspond to the ideal conditions. In practice, with a bit of wind and depending on the flying style or mode, it ends after around 25 minutes. Nevertheless, this is a really good value, with which the DJI Flip comes very close to significantly more expensive drones such as the Air 3S. Charging takes around 80 minutes.
Although the DJI Flip is already available at a very reasonable price of 439.00 euros, we would still recommend buying the Fly More Combo, which costs 340 euros more. This not only includes the (better) RC 2 controller or a practical transport bag for the drone and accessories, but also two additional batteries and a practical charging station. This increases the flight time to up to one and a half hours, while all three batteries can be conveniently and quickly charged in the station.
DJI Flip Review: Conclusion
With the Neo, DJI has already impressively demonstrated its expertise in the field of entry-level drones. This expertise naturally also flows into the DJI Flip, which eliminates the most important criticisms of the Neo, which is almost half the price.
These are primarily the image quality and battery life. The former is almost on a par with significantly more expensive drones and not only produces impressive videos, but also excellent, detailed and crisp photos.
At the same time, the battery life increases to a whopping 31 minutes, which means you can stay in the air much longer and take these wonderful shots – and thanks to the C0 classification, you don’t even need a drone license.
Operation is child’s play. Whether by smartphone, remote control or voice command. There is also not much to complain about when it comes to the flight characteristics of the DJI Flip. Only in terms of obstacle detection and maximum speed do more expensive models deliver even better results.
Overall, this results in an absolutely coherent price-performance ratio, which makes the DJI Flip perhaps the best drone currently available in the entry-level segment.
