Maono Wave T5 Review: Excellent scope of delivery

  • Extensive scope of delivery
  • Three receivers (2x smartphone, 1x camera) included
  • Various magnetic clips and holders

The brand new Maono Wave T5 lavalier microphone is unfortunately not yet available on Amazon in Germany, but can be purchased via the manufacturer’s online store. However, it should be listed by the mail order giant within a few days.

To start with, the entire package is available at a special price of around 114 euros. This is significantly less than the competition from DJI or Rode, for example. In return, you get an impressive scope of delivery with the Wave T5.

The scope of delivery is lavish

Included, for example, is a robust charging case that supplies power to the two camera receivers and the transmitter, which are also included. It is charged via USB-C and has a four-stage LED charging indicator on the front.

The manufacturer also includes a hard-shell carrying case in which the charging case can be transported safely. This also contains the two smartphone receivers with USB-C and Lightning connection, so that all devices are covered. Top: DJI has dispensed with the Lightning adapter for the Mic Mini, for example.

Top: Adapter for USB-C and Lightning

There is also space in the separate compartments for the two clips for attaching the receivers to clothing, as well as a net on the top where any cables and other accessories can be stored.

And of course there are plenty of these included in the scope of delivery:

  • 3.5 mm jack to 3.5 mm jack cable
  • USB-C to USB-C cable
  • 2 windscreen protectors
  • Four additional magnetic clips
  • 2 magnetic neck straps with which the receivers can be worn around the neck
  • 1 leather pouch for transport box and all accessories

Maono Wave T5 tReview: They are so small

  • incredibly small and light
  • firm magnetic mounts
  • good workmanship

Portable lavalier microphones should be as small and unobtrusive as possible. The Maono Wave T5 achieves this perfectly. The transmitters are circular and come with a flat top. With a diameter of just 26 mm and a height of around 16 mm, they are significantly more compact than their counterparts from DJI and the like, for example, and one of the transmitters weighs just 9 grams.

A total of two of these transmitters are included so that stereo recordings are possible without any problems. They have a magnet on the back (we already know this from DJI), which can be easily attached to clothing in conjunction with the included clips.

Fastening clip

Of course, the camera receiver, which at 42 mm x 26 mm x 20 mm is also pleasantly handy, is also a must. This can also be attached to clothing using a clip, but has no magnets.

With a weight of 13 grams, it is also pleasantly light, which is also due to the plastic construction. All components are made of plastic and do not feel quite as robust and high-quality as their more expensive counterparts, such as those from DJI and Rode, but the build quality does not give cause for criticism.

However, you only need this receiver if you want to use the Maono Wave T5 with a DLSM or compact camera with a hotshoe slot. The connection to the cam is then made via the supplied 3.5 mm jack cable.

However, if you want to use the T5 with your smartphone, you can use the two mobile receivers with USB-C or Lightning. With their flat, pill-shaped design, these are thinner than a smartphone itself (the picture shows an iPhone 15 Pro as an example).

Particularly practical: Both receivers also have an additional USB-C port on the side, which can be used to charge the connected smartphone, for example via a power bank, while you are using the microphones.

Setup and operation

  • Plug and play
  • Useful status LEDs

Setting up the Maono Wave T5 is child’s play. Simply connect the receiver to your smartphone and the transmitters will pair automatically, which is indicated by a blue status LED on both units and that’s it.

Blue LEDs: The transmitters are ready for use

The status LEDs on both devices also provide further useful details. For example, a green light indicates that smoke suppression is active, while a red light shows that the battery is running low. These displays and colors are identical on transmitters and receivers.

What is unfortunately not possible, in comparison to the DJI Mic 2, is a pure Bluetooth pairing of the transmitter with a smartphone. So you can’t do it without a receiver.

If you want to use the Wave T5 with a camera, pairing is just as simple. Simply connect the receiver to the Hotshoe adapter, plug the jack cable into the corresponding port and off you go. The status LED display on the top of the receiver provides information about the microphone gain setting, which can be adjusted in a total of three stages.

The Maono Wave T5 is also quickly ready for use on a camera

Of course, there is also the status LED on the front with the same features as the mobile receiver.

Operation

  • simple controls
  • Remote camera release

In terms of operation, the much more expensive DJI Mic 2 has a clear advantage, as the receiver can be used intuitively thanks to the touchscreen. Unfortunately, the Maono Wave T5 does not offer any pictures. Nevertheless, its use is absolutely intuitive and quickly understood even by non-experts.

If you take the transmitters out of the charging case and have connected a receiver, the pair automatically connect to each other within a few fractions of a second and are immediately ready for use.

The transmitters themselves only have two buttons, whose labels actually explain everything important. The mute button is highlighted in red and can be used to mute the microphone… can be muted. Practical: It also serves as a remote camera release if you hold it down for two seconds. This allows you to start photo and video recordings remotely directly from the transmitter.

Maono Wave T5Maono Wave T5 The power button switches the transmitter on (or off) by holding it down and activates the AI-supported noise suppression at the touch of a button – more on this later. The receiver, on the other hand, only has a button for noise reduction

App connection: Maono Link

  • Clearly arranged app
  • Practical additional functions

This means that gain and other settings can only be adjusted via the Maono Link companion app. Not tragic, but DJI’s solution is far more convenient.

The companion app for Android and iOS is clearly laid out and offers a wide range of functions. Unfortunately, it is only available in English – not a bad thing, as the functions are self-explanatory.

Maono Wave T5Maono Wave T5
The companion app is clearly structured

In the main menu, you can not only see the battery status of both microphones, but are also informed about the volume of the recording below the product image. If this is too loud or too quiet, you can make adjustments using the “Microphone Gain” control.

Below this, you will find options for influencing the sound:

  • Noise Reduction describes the AI-supported noise reduction to filter out ambient noise. Three options are available here (Slight, Moderate and Strong), as well as an individual setting.
  • Sound Coloration allows you to change the timbre of your recordings. The Voice Enhacer, Huskiness, Warmth and Brightness options are available here, which we will discuss in more detail below.

And that’s actually all there is to the settings. You can still perform firmware updates in the Options section. At the time of testing, updates for the transmitter and receiver were already available for download here.

Battery life and features

  • Up to 9 hours runtime for the transmitters
  • 30 hours in conjunction with charging case
  • 200 meter wireless range

Despite its compact dimensions, the Maono Wave T5 scores with an excellent battery life. Up to 9 hours are possible for the transmitters alone – that’s a whopping three hours more than the DJI Mic 2, but around one and a half hours less than the DJI Mic Mini. The charging case adds another 21 hours of runtime, so that you are equipped for a full 30 hours of use.

The range of functions shows why Maono is able to achieve a comparatively low price here. Additional functions such as a second safety track, a low-cut filter or the option to save recordings directly to the transmitters without a smartphone are unfortunately missing here.

Maono Wave T5Maono Wave T5

However, I didn’t really miss them during the test. The Safety Track function known from DJI, in which a second audio track is recorded at a 6 dB lower volume, can certainly save the lives of amateurs. However, if you get to grips with the gain a little before recording and try it out, you won’t miss this missing feature of the Maono Wave T5 either.

According to the manufacturer, the maximum range in open, interference-free environments is up to 300 meters. In practice, I achieved a range of around 200 meters, but as soon as I turned around and interrupted the lign of sight between the transmitter and receiver, the sound dropped out noticeably. DJI and Rode deliver significantly better results here, even if the result is of course still very good.

Sound quality of the Maono Wave T5

  • Excellent, detailed sound
  • many setting options

In terms of audio specifications, the Maono Wave T5 is very well positioned. It covers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and has a maximum resolution of 48 kHz at 24 bit, which corresponds to studio quality.

The signal-to-noise ratio is 80 dB, while the maximum sound pressure level of 120 dB ensures that there is no unpleasant distortion even with loud ambient noise.

Maono Wave T5Maono Wave T5

In terms of sound, the microphone cuts a very good figure and records the voice in great detail, clearly and without audible background noise. Compared to the smartphone’s standard microphone, the quality is significantly improved.

Here are sample recordings of the integrated iPhone 15 Pro microphone, the Maono Wave T5 and the DJI Mic 2 for comparison:

iPhone 15 Pro – microphone test recording:

Maono Wave T5 – microphone test recording:
DJI Mic 2 – microphone test recording:
In a direct comparison with DJI, I personally think that the Maono Wave T5 provides the most detailed and realistic representation of my voice. However, even without active noise reduction, the DJI Mic 2 has the edge when it comes to reducing ambient noise.

Noise Reduction

But what about the noise reduction of the Wave T5? Here’s an example (note: attention, loud!):
In my opinion, it is quite impressive how this small microphone filters out or reduces ambient noise. Admittedly: This is a really extreme example, but it shows very well what is possible. At the “Strong” and “Custom” levels, however, it also becomes clear how the digital sound chip has to intervene to bring the voice to the fore.

Here I would only use the “Moderate” setting as a maximum, as the sound quality decreases noticeably beyond this. In extreme situations, however, the higher settings also deliver clear speech intelligibility

Sound Coloration

While the Maono Wave T5 does not offer a direct equalizer with which you can influence the sound, a total of four “Sound Coloration” presets within the companion app can be used to change the voice. You have the following options to choose from:

  • Voice enhancer: Expands the spectrum of styles
  • Brightness: Adds a little more brightness to the voice and raises the treble
  • Warmth: Gives the voice more fullness and warmth
  • Huskiness: Reduces a flat, rough and hoarse voice

Let’s listen to another example of this:
The differences between the presets are subtle, but in my eyes (or ears) they are absolutely audible. You should try it out a little and see which preset is best suited to your personal voice and your individual preferences.

Maono Wave T5 Review: Conclusion

With the Maono Wave T5, the manufacturer has delivered an absolute price-performance hit in my eyes. Content creators in particular benefit from the outstanding sound quality of the wireless lavalier microphones, which massively improve the sound compared to the standard microphone of the smartphone or camera.

I was particularly impressed by the sound in combination with the compact dimensions. Here you are absolutely on a par with the sometimes significantly more expensive competition. The scope of delivery is gigantic and equips you perfectly for all areas of use.

However, the comparatively low price is definitely noticeable. In terms of sound, counterparts from the market leaders DJI or Rode get a little more out of it, the operation is a little more versatile and the workmanship is of a higher quality. But what you get for the price is almost unbeatable.
