Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: design and workmanship
At first glance, it’s not just the compact dimensions of the Aqara G5 Pro that stand out. At 70.5 x 70.5 x 89 mm, it is actually quite small. It is therefore almost surprising that it is still comparatively heavy at 560 g in the WiFi version. This already indicates that there is a lot of technology under the hood.
Apart from the slim form factor, the surveillance camera, which is available in either gray or white, scores with a pleasingly modern design. The camera technology on the front almost reminds me of the camera unit of a current iPhone 16 Pro (€ 1,059.00 *) – only in large format.
On the back, you can use the enclosed flap opener to remove a protective cover, which houses the reset button, a tripod thread and two QR codes for later commissioning via app. A look at the underside reveals the USB-C port, the speaker and the camera’s customizable and rather massive stand. Unfortunately, this does not allow swivel movements, which somewhat restricts the field of view.
Similar expensive competitors such as the eufy SoloCam S340 (Review | € 152.99 *) have the edge here. Apart from that, I really like the design and build quality. The Aqara camera doesn’t just feel good. It also offers protection against water and dust in accordance with the IP65 standard – perfect conditions for outdoor use.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: PoE or WiFi?
If you have the choice, you’re spoiled for choice. This also applies to the Aqara G5 Pro. After all, you can choose between two different versions of the surveillance camera. For our test, we received the WiFi model of the camera. As the name suggests, this receives wireless access to the network via your home Wi-Fi. However, even the WiFi version is not completely wireless. As Aqara has not installed a battery here, the camera must always be supplied with power via a USB-C port. We think that’s a bit of a shame. I would also have liked at least the option of a power supply via a classic power connection.

The camera could then also be attached to an existing lamp connection on the outside wall, for example. If you don’t want to drill a hole in the wall and don’t have an external socket nearby, you will also need an extension cable. After all, the USB cable supplied is likely to be too short for many people. As a counterpart, the manufacturer also offers its surveillance camera with Power over Ethernet (PoE). In this case, the camera is connected to your Internet via a waterproof LAN port on the underside, not just by cable. The camera also receives the necessary power via the LAN cable.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: Installation
When it comes to installation, the surveillance camera from Aqara is quite straightforward. The use of the stand is certainly obvious. This allows you to easily set up the camera at the desired location. However, you should only use this method if it is a windless location or if you want to use the camera indoors anyway.
You can provide significantly more stability by screwing the stand to a wall. You will find the appropriate screws and wall plugs in the scope of delivery. If you remove the rear panel, you will find the third installation option. There is a tripod thread here. This means you can also easily attach the G5 Pro to existing mounts.
The big advantage of the latter installation method is certainly the look. After all, you can simply unscrew the stand if necessary. In the end, only the camera unit remains, which makes for a pleasantly tidy appearance, especially when used on a house wall.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: Getting started
The installation is followed by commissioning. The best way to do this is to use Aqara’s own app. You can easily add the camera as a new device via this app. Thanks to the clear software, this is easy even for beginners. Finally, the manufacturer provides foolproof step-by-step instructions.
Alternatively, you can also operate the G5 Pro via Apple HomeKit – Matter makes it possible. A corresponding update will follow soon. Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT are also supported. This means that the camera can also be easily integrated into existing smart home systems with other devices. This is anything but a matter of course.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: Aqara app
However, if you want to get the most out of the camera, we recommend using Aqara’s own app. This scores points with its clear layout, making it easy to find your way around even as a newcomer. However, this is more due to the sensible layout than to the limited setting options.
There are many of them. Privacy settings are particularly important. If the camera not only has your property in its sights, but also public areas or a neighbor’s property, you need to take action. To do this, you can conveniently define blind areas of the camera, which enables operation in accordance with the applicable data protection regulations.
Apart from that, you can set pretty much any parameter. Our app screenshots should make this clear. Of course, the G5 Pro also shines in combination with other devices from the Aqara family. Various automations are possible here, making it easier to set up a smart home.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: AI motion detection
You can also make detailed settings for motion detection in the app. The G5 Pro relies on AI-supported technology that can distinguish between animals, vehicles, people and even parcels. Although the system works quite reliably out of the box, it is also overcautious. If you don’t want to receive push notifications every minute, you can easily adjust the sensitivity of the system.

What’s really cool is that the G5 Pro even offers face recognition. It can distinguish between known and unknown faces. In practice, this looks like this with the right settings: If an unknown person is on your property or in front of your door for a longer period of time, the camera triggers an alarm, which manifests itself in a push message on your smartphone, for example.
In practice, the system worked quite well. However, eufy is still a little ahead in this respect. I liked the face recognition of the eufyCam S330 (Review | € 420.00 (€ 210.00 / stück)*) even better. However, the cameras also play in a different price league and require a separate eufy HomeBase S380 (Review | € 139.00 *) to function.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: image quality
Just one look at the technical data makes it clear that Aqara doesn’t want to mess around with the Camera Hub G5 Pro, but rather go big. After all, the manufacturer has opted for a razor-sharp resolution of 2688×1520 pixels. However, the camera not only scores points in bright daylight with sharp images and natural colors.
You also get great shots at night. Although the camera has a powerful floodlight, you don’t actually need it. After all, the Aqara offers color night vision. This works really well in practice, but in my opinion it can’t quite keep up with the performance of an eufyCam S3 Pro (Review | € 649.00 (€ 324.50 / stück)*).
But despite the presence of colored night vision, the floodlight is by no means useless. In combination with a motion detector, it skillfully scares off unwanted visitors. When it comes to the field of view, however, other cameras show a better side. The Camera Hub offers a total of 133°. Some competitors deliver significantly better values here. Anyone with a large property should bear this in mind.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: camera meets hub
The name “Camera Hub” is of course no coincidence. The surveillance camera with all its benefits, such as extensive smart home compatibility and AI features, can be operated without a hub. You can therefore save yourself the trouble of buying an Aqara Hub M3 (€ 109.99 *).

In a way, the surveillance camera is an all-round carefree package that can even take over the management tasks of your smart home. This is made possible by support for the Thread and Zigbee standards. On top of this, Matter support will soon be added via an update.
And that’s not all. The Camera Hub also works as a kind of repeater for your wireless network if required. This should make it easier for other devices to connect to your network. However, the system does have one Achilles heel – the memory is limited to 8 GB.
This simply cannot be expanded. But there are solutions for this too. Those who prefer convenience can simply use the Aqara cloud. However, online storage also means monthly costs of at least 5 euros/month. Alternatively, the extensive compatibility of the system ensures that you can easily store the recordings on your home NAS, for example.
Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro test: Intercom function
Of course, the G5 Pro also comes with an integrated speaker that lives up to its name. After all, it can get pretty damn loud. This is used together with the integrated microphone for the intercom function. This allows you to talk to parcel carriers or other visitors even when you’re not at home. Alternatively, the speaker can also be used as a powerful alarm siren.
Conclusion
The Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro impresses in the test with its first-class build quality, high image resolution and flexible smart home integration. The AI-supported motion detection with face recognition and object classification in particular sets it apart from many of its competitors. The color night vision, floodlight for deterrence and versatile mounting options are also clear plus points.
However, there are also a few weaknesses: The lack of a battery in the WiFi version limits flexibility and the 133° field of view could be larger. In addition, the internal memory of 8 GB is quite small and expansion is not possible. However, if you don’t mind, the G5 Pro is a powerful outdoor camera that not only monitors, but also acts as a smart home hub thanks to Zigbee and Thread support.
